Meet Dave. He’s a tradie from Melbourne who’s been on the tools for over 35 years. Yes, he dreams of retiring soon – just not quite yet.

He’s been married to Rachel for more decades than either of them care to admit. Their youngest left home last year so they’re still adjusting to the whole empty nest thing… they’re not unhappy about it though. The pair are lucky to have plenty in common: footy, travel, fishing and quiet nights at home in front of the tele. They’ve also got a wide circle of old friends, plus Dave enjoys spending time with his work mates.

Dave’s primary interest at the moment is saving as much money as he can for retirement. He knows that every little bit he can save today will be money he can spend in the years ahead. Which he plans on turning into one, long fishing trip (he’s still working that through with Rach).

Citro is helping Dave reach his retirement goals. He’s been a Citro cardholder for a few months now, so he’s really in the swing of things. Every day he transacts using his Citro Card and the cashback earnings savings really add up. He’s turned the ‘grow your super’ toggle on in his app, so all the cashback he earns goes directly into his super account. It’s an effortless way for him to add extra to his super each month – just doing what he usually does, spending how he usually spends.

Okay, so at this point I need to tell you that Dave is actually a character I made up based on many of our Citro customers. Sorry, but fictitious Dave is the quickest way to introduce you to a ‘typical’ Citro cardholder. I want to show you how easy it is to use your Citro Card each day to buy what you need and put real money back into your pocket or into your super (your choice).

To give you an idea, here’s how Dave used his Citro Card last Tuesday.

Morning

  • Coffee and a bacon & egg roll delivered via Uber Eats before heading to work (it’s the first time he’s used Uber Eats so he gets $10 cashback)
  • Fuels up the ute – at the pump he uses the Ampol gift card he bought using his Citro Card (1% cashback = $1.10)
  • Dave pops into Bunnings to buy some supplies for the site – he pays with the Bunnings eGift card he bought using his Citro Card (0.25% cashback = $1.25 cashback)

Morning cashback = $12.35

Lunchtime

  • Orders lunch via Menulog for himself and several workmates (they’ll pay him back later) (5% cashback = $5.50)
  • Buys a pair of boots online during his lunch break – Windsor Smith Stockman T-moro boots (3% cashback = $6.90)
  • Fits in the weekly Coles online shop (0.15% cashback $0.56), which he’ll Click and Collect on his way home.

Lunchtime cashback = $12.96

Cashback so far = $25.31

After work

  • Shouts after work drinks for the boys on-site – goes to BWS via the Citro app and gets in a couple of slabs of Great Northern and a few no alcohol beers. It’s delivered within the hour. (3.5% cashback = $4.20)
  • Dog food and supplies – shops online at PetStock to grab dog food and a new chew toy for Buzz, his Kelpie-cross (5% cashback = $3.10)
  • Remembers he’s been meaning to get Buzz some pet insurance – signs up with a Citro Knose Pet Insurance offer and gets $75 cashback
  • Compares his hospital + extras health insurance on Compare the Market while he’s at it and decides to swap to a new, better value plan (he scores the maximum $150 cashback)

After work cashback = $232.30

Cashback so far = $257.61

Evening

  • Rach books Bali accommodation for a holiday using Booking.com (3% cashback = $33)
  • Dave then books the flights with Virgin Australia (1.25% cashback = $8.75)
  • Adds Freely travel insurance – (15% cashback = $16.50)
  • Spontaneously buys a spinnerbait bundle to take on the holiday from Fishing Warehouse – (5% cashback = $7.50)

Evening cashback = $65.75

Total cashback earned for the day = $323.36

That’s right, in just one day, Dave has added an extra $323.36 to his super, without making any sacrifices or even doing anything differently. Admittedly, he’s probably not booking holidays or changing his health insurance provider every day, but he’s definitely earning some kind of cashback most days.

At the supermarket, chemist, buying gifts, filling up at the petrol station, even buying his toilet paper, Dave is earning money back. He’s choosing to put it straight into his super account, but you might choose to save it towards booking a holiday… where you can earn more cashback to put towards another holiday… where you can earn more cashback… and so it goes.

Life is good, huh?

Dave may be a fictitious character, but the Citro cashback deals mentioned here are all very real. How much cashback are you missing out on? Use our online rewards calculator then check out the deals in the Citro App – download on Apple or Android
